James White re search

When I attended OFFF in Barcelona the artist that still sticks out from all the rest for me is James White.  A digital artist that uses Photoshop to mainly re-create stuff he loved as a kid such as movies and comic characters.  Since I want to focus on bold and colour I thought re search into his stuff would be beneficial.

James white's work is very electronic and visually screaming at you in such a drastically bold way and thats why I love it.  The colours and textures he uses captures his design direction perfectly.  They go hand in hand.

This 'Awesome' poster was created and inspired when he was a kid in the 80s.  The vibrant and bold typeface immediately captures your attention.  A silver gradient with highlights is used with a neon stroke of red and orange.  The actual typeface itself is very 80s in your face design.  The road reaches a vantage point until it becomes invisible.  I think the illusion of Depth is very clever and when used in the right way like this is very effective.  Something to consider and think about.

The above poster was created for Far Cry.  The neon colour and lasers shooting from the dinosaurs eyes is just insane and demonstrates it perfectly.  A trend in his designs is the typical neon grid at the bottom of the poster.  The main colour here is neon pink and dark colours.

The same sort of colour palette is used in this Drive poster.  The effect of slicing out the neon background and parts of his face is very clever and I love the way he added the blue stream coming from the front to the behind of his eye.  This creates the illusion of movement.  Without this, the image appears still.

I love the terminator films and this poster also. The grid is also appearing in the upper part of the poster this time instead of the bottom.  The same colour is used in his eyes as the grid.  Maybe a red colour would work better here because the terminator has red robotic eyes.

This one above is one of my favourite.  The textures he's used throughout the design creates a sense of depth, design dynamics and appears very striking.  I love how that triangular shape looks as it looks like It's presenting something.  The moon placed behind it separates the background coloured texture and the colour of the pyramid.

Another electric looking poster.  I like the lightening and it's effect.

I like the illusion created in this one - the appearance of a girl's face against the forest in the background.  Shadows of people are cast over it and they really stand out.

This poster 'The Sword' is for the band that her used to listen to when we was younger.  Again, I love the textures used here.

Textures used in the poster are similar to two others Ive mentioned.

The above was a series of 10 posters for Tron Legacy countdown.  I love the clean crisp look of the figure and the neon lighting.

Thus poster is very powerful.  The same sort of design decisions have been used here with the neon lighting, the lightening bolts and dark backgrounds.  The depth of the stairs creates a great affect with the people walking up along it.

What I have learnt about this re-search:

I have learnt that colour is a huge decision when I come to making my series.  I have seen a few things here that I mix up a bit in my own style and incorporate that in that dance music scene of Above and Beyond.  I love this work.
